filling up to check an email or make a call, you are now stuck holding
the stupid pump thing like a dude at a gang-bang. Time to start
shaping up America, cause we keep this up and the Chinese will be
running over us in a month

Must be an East Coast thing.
All the gas stations I use in Southern California, Northern California, and the Las Vegas area still have the latch on the gas pumps handles so that you can pump gas and do other, more important things on the trusty old iPhone 4S. Like surf online pornography or read about Aldon Smith making bomb threats at LAX.
