Take on the broken escalator

What the hell is it about a non working escalator which makes it so
miserable? In essence it is just a big stairwell but somehow
psychologically it is the most daunting set of stairs ever. It could
be the fact that those metal steps have no give or that there is no
banister or maybe it is because the actual step is slightly higher
than standard but when I see a non working escalator I feel like I'm
asked to do the corporate challenge

They don't want you to leave.

Casino-hotels in Vegas do this all the time. Two big conveyer belts or escalators. The one entering the casino-hotel is always moving. The one leaving is never moving and is always "broken."

This is to give the subtle, subconscious push to keep you there at the casino-hotel just a little longer, so that you lose every dollar you have. It's a semi-dirty trick. Sneaky. But effective.

Basically, this is something a girl would have thought up. Or someone with a colonial mentality -- i.e., Chinese, Jew, Middle Easterner, Southeast Asian, Filipino, Latino, African, and/or gay.
