Trump is talking about skipping the debates mostly so he won't have to answer any questions from people not friendly to his cause. This serves another purpose which is that it doesn't allow for the democratic nominee to get to debate the incumbent which allows him to delegitimizing them in his own way. Without the ability to debate him, they can't put themselves at his perceived level, they will look like the little kid in the playground trying to get the attention of their older brother. This is obviously not true but in a country where 63million morons voted for him, any opportunity to not give the democratic nominee a voice is a win for Agent Orange
