I distinctly remember being told that when the cost of construction of the George Washington Bridge would've paid off, they would eliminate the toll. That was 40 years and $16/crossing ago. I am sure they sold this idea to the voters back then but just like the $2 toll, it's long history. The idea that any politician would ever willingly take a revenue stream away sounds ludicrous now but somehow we were all duped. The NJ Turnpike apparently had a similar sunset plan but like all good things, that was also just too good to be true.
