Christmas cards have always been a time honored tradition, one which we fully participate in but things are starting to get a bit out of hand
The good. Photos of kids, dogs, family photos, pictures of various activities, funny settings, Christmas trees, photos in tropic islands etc. Truth be told just about anything is good.
But something happened post pandemic when the world went crazy. My daughter opens an envelope the other day catch and looks at me and says "who are these people?"
I look at the envelope and see it's from a couple we know. The card is one of those nice Shutterfly things with the rounded edges and the blazing Happy Holidays banner with a single photo where they decided to feature just their kids which in theory is a cute idea.
They have five people in the card none of whom are the couple who sent the card which is fine as many adults (myself include) don't put their own photos in.
But this isn't just that. In the middle is a teen girl
With her instagram smile on, to her right is her slightly older brother with a dorky grin. both of them wearing holiday sweaters and holding candy canes. I hadn't seen the kids in a few years and it's very cute
But then I look to the older kid's right and see some fat dude who looks like he just rolled out of a Phish concert in 1998 with a hippy beard and a flannel.
To the left are two other people. Some woman who looks like she works as a corporate lawyer for American Dream and her new balding overweight husband who has a tie on where the back part is slightly longer than the front side. They are both in their 30's.
If this was shtick that would be cool but it looks like this is a genuine photo. The entire crew doesn't have a cringy look like they are being tortured, the tortured part was left to me.
